Cissy King

Actress and Dancer

A native southwesterner, Cissy King grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. You could say she began her "show biz" career at the age of 3 ½ when she toddled into her first dance class, but Cissy says she didn't get serious until she was four. She began ballroom dancing early and won many local and regional competitions. At fourteen, Cissy teamed with her brother, John, to win three consecutive United States National Championships, including The North American International Dance Championship in New York City. That same year, Dance Magazine named John and Cissy King as Ballroom Dance Couple of the Year

At the University of New Mexico, Cissy was a competitive diver, on the gymnastics team, a UNM cheerleader and a Chaparral (spirit dance team], also Engineering Queen, Queen of Coronado Dorm, and Homecoming Princess. Cissy won a college talent contest to spend the summer as a performer in the Campus Review at Six Flags in Texas. The next year Six Flags asked her to choreograph the next season's shows.

While defending her title at the Star Ball at the Hollywood Palladium, Cissy met Bobby Burgess of the Lawrence Welk Show. He asked Cissy to dance, then to audition the next day. A few months later, Bobby invited Cissy to come to Hollywood for a guest appearance and to meet Mr. Welk. Shortly after that Cissy was called to join the Lawrence Welk Musical Family. Immediately following her final exam at UNM, Cissy packed up and headed to Hollywood. Rehearsals for Cissy's first engagement at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe with Welk were at the same Hollywood Palladium where only a few months before, Cissy had first met Bobby. Three weeks later with Bobby, Cissy became a dancing star with Lawrence Welk and his Champagne Music Makers. In her twelve years of weekly performances on The Lawrence Welk Show, where Bobby and Cissy were known as America’s Favorite Dance Team, Cissy established herself as a multi-faceted talent and a favorite with the fans ever since.

Cissy has received numerous dance awards. Dance Masters of America Award for Outstanding Contribution to Dance is just one. Other recipients of this prestigious award include Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell and Bob Fosse. Besides the Welk TV show, Cissy and Bobby toured extensively. She recollects they played nearly every arena, performing arts concert house [including Madison Square Garden and the Canadian National Exposition], as well as most county and state fairs in all of North America. Besides the schedule of personal appearances and taping 46 TV shows a year, they were favorites appearing on many of the TV variety and talk shows of the day.

Six Flags persuaded Cissy to return to direct and choreograph the live shows for all of the Six Flags Theme Parks. All of her live show productions were voted by the park guests as "Best Ride in the Park".
